Make a wish come true

I found this just a second ago and I think it would be such a beautiful, compassionate thing to do. All you have to do to prove compassion isn't dead and to make the wishes of an ill, elderly man come true is send a postcard. That can't be too difficult, can it?

'Wish of a Lifetime needs your help to fulfill the Wish of a caring and compassionate 70 year old who is in the end stages of COPD, and all you need to do is send a postcard.  Tom Burgett of Alabama has been fascinated by the vast diversity of cultures throughout our World.  Unfortunately, Tom’s ability to travel has become unfeasible given his current medical ailments.  Spending most days at home, besides the occasional doctor’s visit – Tom is worried that the outside world will pass him by.
We’re determined to prevent that from happening and with your help we can expose Tom not only to the many fascinating cultures of the world but also its love and respect.  All Tom wants are postcards. By visually visiting the locations on your postcards, Tom knows they will bring joy to his heart through his imagination.  We have fallen head over heels for Tom’s story and have vowed to make his Wish a reality.  Help us show this amazing senior that we still care and that old passions never die, even when you are no longer able to fulfill these passions on your own.
We will deliver all your postcards directly to Tom, so send a postcard highlighting the culture, landscape or people of our world, better yet send two or three and ask your friends to send them too!'

The last book I read...

(This post contains spoilers for the novel 'Me Before You')

The last book I read was 'Me Before You' by  Jojo Moyes. I like books that make me laugh and don't require too much effort on my part to read but, as I decided to tell my Facebook friends:

'I am terrible, truly terrible at choosing books. Admittedly I don't read fiction often, but when I do I prefer to read light-hearted, silly romance novels that don't require too much brain involvement (I think I can be forgiven for this since pretty much my entire degree revolves around reading about the Holocaust). Why is it then, that the last ...four books I've read have left me curled up in a ball at 4 in the morning, weeping over the tragic lives of fictional people?'

Me Before You, though it initially seems like it's going to be a light-hearted love story soon reveals itself to be so much more than that. The story revolves around the lives of its two main characters, Lou, a bit of a klutz with a good heart and a lot of love to give, and Will, a young man who has quickly become jaded with life after being paralysed in an accident.

As the story evolves, Lou, who is working as Will's carer, and Will develop a friendship, although this proves difficult at first due to Will's irritating antagonism. We soon learn, however, that his spite is born out of his desire to end his life, and the fact that Lou has been hired by his mother not so much to take care of him, but rather to keep an eye on him.

Despite the flirtations and the love that grows between the two, Will remains adamant that his life is not worth living anymore. This book offers a truly heart-wrenching look at the moral implications of euthanasia and, perhaps more than that, it teaches us that we should strive to live for every day, because you never know how long you've got left.

My first post...

This is the first time I've ever kept a blog so I'm not really sure what to do with it... hopefully it will be something exciting! As it says in my bio, my name's Rebecca and I'm a 21 year old student from Cambridge, England. I really love my home country and I'm sure at some point I'll share with you some of obscure, little known facts about it as well as the reasons why I love it. I love Germany too, so much so, in fact, that I decided to study German Studies at university. I love the language, the culture, the way of life... so much so that it's hard to put into words (though I'm sure I'll give it a go at some point).

Whilst I'm new to the world of blogging, I'm not entirely new to the world of writing online. I joined Hubpages a few weeks ago, and I've made quite a lot of progress there, writing over 30 articles (or Hubs, as we say there) on topics such as health, weight loss, nutrition.... That sounds like I could be accused of being a bit of a health freak, but I swear I'm not! I just think it's important to think about, and that we should do the best by our bodies that we can whilst still getting all the enjoyment that we can squeeze out of life. I'm sure a lot of the topics that I write about on Hubpages will also be the things that I talk about here, though perhaps in a different way.

I'm really excited to start blogging and though it all seems completely bewildering and nonsensical to me at the moment, I'm hoping I will figure it out soon. Wish me luck!
